Dark Meat 232 – Story IS Character

April 19th, 2011

The title is a quote from my screenwriting teacher, Robert McKee, who taught me 3-act structure. If you saw ADAPTATION, he was played by Brian Cox! Anyway, the show is about movies and more narrowly about screenplays, except a couple of songs that are about actors. Because they would insist on the attention. It’s never about the writers! NEVER!

* Dramarama – Scenario
* Paul Simon – Rewrite
* Stan Ridgway – Classic Hollywood Ending
* David Bowie – Cracked Actor
* The Kinks – Celluloid Heroes
* Rupert Holmes – Widescreen
* Soul Coughing – Screenwriter’s Blues
* Limahl – Never Ending Story

Dark Meat Leftovers: Attention Span

April 13th, 2011

The host of this show has no time to listen to a show this week, let alone put one together, so I’m digging back into the archives.  I test your patience with a couple of very long songs… it’s just like being back in the seventies, listening to Alice’s Restaurant on FM while the DJ is out toking up.

* Kraftwerk – Autobahn
* Boingo – Change

Dark Meat 231: Jesus!

April 5th, 2011

Happy Easter everybody – here comes the Dark Meat Jesus spectacular! (Also, I’m appearing in Jesus Christ Superstar later this month in Simi Valley. Come, and bring peeps for the actors) Not that I NEED an excuse to throw together a show about Jesus. You can’t swing a sponge on a stick without hitting a song about the dude.

* Barry Gray Orchestra – Main Theme, The Secret Service
* Beatles – Lady Madonna
* Monsters of Folk – Dear God
* Johnny Cash – Personal Jesus
* Ben Folds – Jesusland
* Sugarplastic – Jesus Is His Name

* Tin Machine – Under The God
* They Might Be Giants – Kiss Me Son Of God

Dark Meat 230: Coming Of Age

March 28th, 2011

You were young once. Or you are young now. Though if you are, you’re probably not listening to THIS show! Haha! Anyway, young people grow up one day, and that’s that the show is about – coming of age.

* Metropolis America – You Don’t Have To
* Papas Fritas – We’ve Got All Night

* Cowsills – Meet Me At the Wishing Well

Dark Meat 229: Sexy Ladies In the Eighties

March 21st, 2011

I’m not ashamed to admit that I picked this theme because it was easy. Besides, 80′s music is a style all its own and it deserves a show to itself instead of peppering every other selection of a show. What’s the theme? Women in the eighties. Either songs about women, or by women. Whatever. Who doesn’t dig chicks, am I right?

By the way, note that it’s not Sexy Ladies in THEIR Eighties. Betty White only put out so many records.

* The Tubes – Sushi Girl
* Bow Wow Wow – C30 C60 C90 Go!
* OMD – This is Helena
* Kraftwerk – The Model
* Duran Duran – Girls On Film
* Sinead O’Connor – Mandinka
* Kim Wilde – Kids In America
* Debbie Harry – French Kissin’ In the USA
* Belinda Carlisle – Heaven Is A Place On Earth
* Martha and the Muffins – Echo Beach

Dark Meat 228: Feeding the Fat Boy

March 15th, 2011

To commemorate my XX birthday (not the number you’re thinking of) songs about self-esteem, naturally denoting the lack of same. What do you expect from losers like this?

* Residents – The Sold-Out Artist
* Brenda Lee – I’m Sorry
* Nick Drake – Parasite
* Dave Frishberg – Slappin’ The Cakes On Me
* Steely Dan – What A Shame About Me
* Candypants – Mandelay
* Beatles – I’m A Loser
* Fiona Apple – Fast As You Can
* The Forum – Girl Without A Boy

Dark Meat 227: NoTheme Going On

March 8th, 2011

This week, it’s just a bunch of songs, one after the other. How do they relate to each other? They do not! What clever point am I making? None! The best I’ll say is I tried to play artists I don’t usually play. Or at least haven’t played lately. Except for … you know what, there is NO THEME.

* Roxy Music – All I Want Is You
* Suki Tawdry – Night Of Joy
* Scott Walker – Such A Small Love
* Velvet Underground – All Tomorrow’s Parties
* Talking Heads – Don’t Worry About The Government
* Tom Waits – Goin’ Out West
* The New Pornographers – The Spirit of Giving In
* Lambchop – The Old Gold Shoe
* Shivaree – Daring Lousy Guy

Dark Meat 226: A Hovering, Unnamed Dread

February 28th, 2011

Spring is just around the corner… but that’s no guarantee that you’ll live to see it! If something terrible happens before then, at least you got to hear this collection of catchy tunes. Not so much catchy I guess. More like INVASIVE.

* Beatles – Blue Jay Way
* The Whistler – Excerpt
* Dangermouse, Sparklehorse and David Lynch – Dark Night Of The Soul
* Combustible Edison – Cry Me A River
* Pink Martini – Que Sera Sera
* The Residents – Hello Skinny
* The Billy Nayer Show – Party
* The Kinks – Rainy Day In June
* Blossom Dearie – Figure Eight
* Gary Jules – Mad World

Dark Meat 225: Capitalasm

February 22nd, 2011

The free market solves all problems! For example, this week it gave me a theme around which to group my little song music show. If you like it, I’ll do another show next week with exactly the same songs, and keep on playing them until my numbers go down. Then I’ll do something else.

* 10CC – Art For Art’s Sake
* Spinal Tap – Cash On Delivery
* The Transitones – Movin’ On Up
* The Tubes – I Want It All Now
* White Stripes – Little Cream Soda
* Steely Dan – Things I Miss The Most
* Joe Jackson – It’s All Too Much
* Halfnelson – Batteries Not Included
* Kinks – Low Budget
* Randy Newman – The World Isn’t Fair

Dark Meat Bulletin – No Show This Week!

February 16th, 2011

No show this week because my computer was down for a couple of days. In lieu of that, I will call your attention to the work of Garfunkel & Oates, particularly this medley of songs they don’t like. It’s almost like having a whole show only much, much shorter.

More of the girls here.
